Pin curls, finger waves? Glamorous 40's hairstyles?

For my prom i'm having an 40's/50's style dress and i'm wearing Mary Jane shoes.

My hairs just about touching my shoulders and i'd love to try an old-fashioned pin curl hairstyle. I know it can't be done with conventional curling tongs, so how do you do it? I also have a side fringe, but i can pin that back if it won't blend into the hairstyle.

I would also like to try out finger waves, but on my own.

I'm very fair-skinned and have medium brown chestnut hair.

I'm thinking Grace Kelly, Ingrid Bergman, Greta Garbo hair. I want something different, all the other girls are going down the fake tan, extentions route lol.

I asked this before and had some fab answers, but forgot to ask about finger waves too.

Help please anybody? Thanks :)

PS. I'd rather do it myself than go to a hairdressers.

Finger waves on your length of hair and colour would really look fab. It is difficult to do yourself as you can't see to do the back. With finger waving your fringe would blend in really well.

You could get someone to help you and you need alot of gel. Comb gel into wet hair and comb your hair back place a finger firmly on your head starting at the top next to your parting. Comb you hair in the opposite direction and place another finger about an inch away from the other and close your fingers slightly and repeat this process for the length of your hair. If you need to secure it while it drys then use clips but place tissue between your hair and the clip so you don't have the clip marks on your hair.

Hello. I have found some information for you. Hopefully if you follow the step below, you will get your dream hair!

How To Create Pin Curls:

This technique is really easy to do and was very popular during the forties and fifties.

Wash hair and allow to dry to about 90 percent.

Decide on where you want the majority of curl. For a really curly look, you can create curls all over the head, or choose sections that frame the face.

Choose small sections of hair that can easily be wound around the finger.

Secure curl by criss-crossing two bobby pins across each curl.

If hair dries before you have completed all the pin curls, mist with water as required.

When curls are completely dry, gently remove the pins and either loosen the curl with the fingers or for a look straight out of the forties, use a comb which will result in a froth of waves.

(Take a look at the website below, it has pictures which show you how you should divide your hair and style it for the pin curl look)
