I have the exact same hair as you and these are a revelation! A total life saver! ALWAYS have one handy everywhere you go! You can wear them with anything, you can have a collection to match your outfit from bussiness to date to costume party... My hair is in one right now. All you do is roll it up behind your head and claw it on the side where all your end are. Make sure they're all tucked in. And if you fiddle around and play with it, you can make a messy bun, half up half down, anything! They dont pull, or break your hair, they dont cause bumps like elastics do, they dont give you headaches because they dont pull... But they DO exactly what you need them to. I love them.

Try getting layers, my hair is the same way and layers really make my hair look less thick. Not only that but layers help you define your curls. For hair styles, you could pull the top part of your hair up and leave the rest down, that is usually a pretty easy hairdo that looks good with curly hair . Messy buns don't work on my hair, but you could just make it a tight bun with a few curls sticking out, or straighten your hair to make it easier to put in a messy bun. hope this helps!

If I were you, I would just use the hot rollers that they sell at walmart. Leave those in for about 2 hrs., and when you take them out what's cute is to put them in a ponytail. I like that style! Also, you could just put your hair in a bun then take your hand and push some of it out of the hair band. For me, I just put it in a bun and go on with my normal daily things, eventually its messy all on it's own:) But try googleing your question if this doesn't help you!
